After almost 3 years of release, Breadcrumbs Interactive surprised PS4 players with additional content called Roots of Evil.
Introduction
Village of Oakvale is under attack of corrupted beasts. Fleeing refugees are quick to blame Leshy, and want him destroyed. However, Woodsman, pleads for a more peaceful solution, setting the stage for a weighty decision.
Ivan, the one-handed blacksmith, must navigate the conflict and decide whether to bow to villagers’ anger, heed the Woodsman’s plea for peace, or take Leshy’s fate entirely into his own hands. On this new quest, he will cross paths with vibrant new characters from Slavic folklore, trickster fox Kuma Lisa, Gigi the Loan Shark and others. To succeed, Ivan can utilize new tools like a combat-ready Pickaxe, new magic items, and new crafting opportunities to defeat the festering corruption.
How to start the DLC?
Luckily, you don’t need to progress far into the main story to be able to start Roots of Evil. In fact, it becomes available straight after the tutorial, which is good news if you played main game a long time ago and didn’t keep the save file. To actually start the DLC, you need to speak to Woodsman. He stands near the exit.
Missables
Pretty much all trophies in Roots of Evil are missable except maybe for
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner. Also, to avoid risk of replaying the DLC, it’s best to make a backup save before the final battle at the Oakvale, to knock out all three endings in one go.
Frozen Peaks & The Swamps
While playing Roots of Evil you’ll visit two locations, Frozen Peaks and Swamps. Each has a few side quests and trophies tied to them.
Malleable Blacksmith,
Sneaky Fox and
Sneaky Blacksmith are connected to Frozen Peaks area and
Motherly Love is related to the Swamps. One of Gigi’s quests also takes place in the Swamps, so it’s worth going there once you progressed Gigi’s questline far enough and he sends you for a final debt collection. This way you hit two birds with one stone.
Brain over Brawn
Successfully pass the Riddler's test
You meet Riddler as part of Gigi story arc (see
Thug Life). You can find her at your home village here:
In order to get money from her, you need to guess in which hand she hides a bag of gold. Choose left hand and the trophy is yours.
A Child at Heart
Equip three of the Trinket Kid's toys at once
This trophy is part of Trinket Kid’s story arc. After you collected all trinkets for kids, of which there are 6, you will need to buy at least 3 talismans from them and equip them. For more information on trinkets and where to find them refer to
Gotta Catch’em All!
Jackpot!
Break the piggybank
After you defeated Leshy and finished the DLC return to Oakvale and go to north-eastern part of the village. You’ll see three pigs there. Kill the smallest one and you’ll get kopeks and a bronze trophy.
Help Kuma Lisa eat Oakvale's chickens
During last mission, before you reach Oakvale, you meet trickster fox Kuma Lisa. She’ll advise you to use a backroad to get into the village. But it doesn’t matter really. Whole area needs to be cleared out anyway to gain access to Leshy. Upon killing everyone you’ll clear a path for Kuma Lisa. She should appear next to you, but if she doesn’t, go to the eastern part of the village, where a chicken coup is, before facing final boss.
Malleable Blacksmith
Take the Stuhacs' offer instead of the Magic Ore
At some point in the story you’ll go to Frozen Peaks to get a special ore. When you reach Stuhacs’ camp, a worshipper will tell you that you’re not welcomed and to go away. Tell him you are interested in an ancient ore and don’t mind paying for it. Worshipper will say he can’t sell you a magic ore and offer Titanium instead. Buy it for 50 kopeks and the trophy will pop.
Sneaky Fox
Help Kuma Lisa eat the Stuhacs' chickens
When you reach a stuhacs’ camp in Frozen Peaks, a stuhac worshipper will tell you to go away unless you want a beating. In order to earn
Sneaky Fox you need to get into a fight with them. After you defeat stuhacs, a fox will appear munching on chickens and the trophy will pop.
Sneaky Blacksmith. To avoid that, don’t choose aggressive responses and once you back out of the dialogue, don’t come near a stuhac worshipper until you’ve gotten a trophy for stealing an ancient ore without being seen.
Sneaky Blacksmith
Steal the Magic Ore without getting caught
This trophy requires a few prerequisites. First, your bad luck meter needs to be less then 50% full. So, be sure to clear it at witch’s hut in the home village before you embark on your next journey and have cloverleaf in your possession (clover is not mandatory but it will make things easier and can work as a safety net). Next, you’ll need 200 kopeks.
Malleable Blacksmith you need 50 kopeks. So, if you don’t want to replay Roots of Evil story, be sure to have at least 250 kopeks in total with you. After you’ve reached stuhacs’ camp in Frozen Peaks and talked to a worshipper, go back around and up and you’ll meet another stuhac. For 200 kopeks he’ll show you a secret passage that will allow you to get to the magic ore without being seen. Walk through the passage, break glass at the right to enter the camp and while moving down keep more to the right side. Carefully walk up to the pillar and interact with it.
You’ll get an ore and will be offered to get more. Don’t do it and leave the camp the way you came. If you get greedy, stuhacs will notice you, regardless of how much bad luck you have. If you really want more of Burning Ice ore, you can leave the camp, wait for the trophy to pop. go back, defeat stuhacs and then interact with the pillar again.
Thug Life
Complete the Loan Shark story arc
SIDE QUESTGigi, the loan shark, will appear at your village after your first fight with Leshy. His story arc consists of four rather short quests (except maybe for the last one) but to be able to start them Ivan has to have at least 5 points in aggressiveness. Once you are aggressive enough, you can find Gigi here:
First, Gigi will ask you to collect 200 kopeks from Vasilii. Vasilii is dead, but you can still find a zombie of him here:
Vasilii will tell you that he doesn’t have money on him but he buried a big sum in a place that is “wet, smells like poop and where people don’t see you clearly.” Vasilii is talking about the outhouse but before diggin up the treasure you need to find a shovel first. Coincidentally, a broken shovel is laying not too far from the treasure itself.
Repair the shovel, and start digging up dirt piles next to the outhouse. In one of them you’ll find 200 kopeks. After that go back to Gigi and give him the money.
Next, Gigi will send you after The Riddler. For more information on where to find her and how to deal with her refer to
Brain over Brawn.
After you return to Gigi with the money, he will send you on yet another errand. This time, he wants you to beat the debt out of an old man with a chicken and a green hat.
Poor fella will say that he doesn’t have anything. You can choose to beat him up or pay Gigi 80 kopeks out of your own pocket.
Final errand will take place at the Swamps. There’s no point in showing you the guy’s location since maps are procedurally generated. Once you find the debtor, you’ll have to fight him, there’s no way around that. He doesn’t have the money though. It’s no problem, loot his camp and sell the valuables to the merchant at the home village for 900 kopeks. This won’t be enough, however, since Gigi wanted a 1000 kopeks from the guy. So, you’ll have to pay the rest out of your own pocket. On the bright side, you’ll finally get the trophy.
Gotta Catch'em All!
Collect all the Trinket Kid's toys
Trinket Kid can be found at the northern part of the village to the east of the exit.
They will ask you to find and bring them 6 trinkets. First, a pine cone, a horseshoe and a broken bottle. Then, a melted candle, a fishbone and a cowbell. All broken toys are located in the village, so no need to go far. Once you collected everything, kids will ask for a talisman. Give them the least useful one, since you won’t see it again. A boy will thank you and tell you to come back later. You can leave the village and return straight away. Now, for one talisman a kid will ask 30 kopeks from you. So, in order to get all six, you will need 180. You can cheat and make a back up save before spending money on useless toys. Once you buy all 6, the trophy will pop. And if you equip 3 of them, you’ll get
A Child at Heart.
Motherly Love
Rescue the Vodnik Mother's kids
SIDE QUESTThis is the trophy for completing a side quest for Vodnika in The Swamps. Bandits took her children and she needs you to bring them back. After you defeat bandits and free Vodnika’s offsprings, return to her and the trophy will unlock.
The Power of Retribution
Kill Leshy
You get the trophy for choosing to kill Leshy after fighting him.
The Power of Friendship
Help Leshy revive the Woodsman
Another ending trophy. You might need to have both mushrooms from the swamp. When you are presented with a choice which mushroom to use on Leshy, choose to use none. After the fight, when talking to Leshy, pick “Woodsman”.
The Power of Forgiveness
Spare Leshy
Ending trophy. After the final boss when speaking to Leshy, choose “Miller?”
