Cyberpunk 2077 Becomes CD Projekt’s Financial Pillar with 35 Million Sales

Cyberpunk 2077 has cemented its status as a commercial powerhouse for CD Projekt Red, having sold over 35 million copies worldwide and establishing itself as the company’s primary revenue source. This milestone, confirmed in the studio’s third-quarter 2025 financial report, was reached in just five years – a faster pace than the acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which sold 30 million copies in its first six years.

This sales achievement marks the completion of one of the gaming industry’s most remarkable redemption stories. Following a launch in 2020 plagued by technical issues, CD Projekt Red spent years overhauling the game with major updates. The transformative Update 2.0 and the acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion fundamentally rebuilt the experience, turning it from a symbol of disappointment into a title frequently praised as one of the best open-world RPGs available. This sustained effort rehabilitated the game’s reputation, convincing both new and returning players to explore the dystopian Night City.

Financially, the impact is clear. For the third quarter of 2025, Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty together generated 72.4% of CD Projekt’s total sales revenue. The company reported a consolidated revenue of nearly 350 million PLN, a significant year-on-year increase, and a net profit that was nearly two and a half times higher than the previous year. This surge was fueled not only by ongoing interest in the game but also by its expansion to new platforms, including releases on the Nintendo Switch 2, Mac devices, and its addition to the PlayStation Plus catalog.

With the original game’s legacy secured, attention is turning to the future. Development on the sequel, Cyberpunk 2 (codenamed Project Orion), is underway across studios in Boston, Warsaw, and Vancouver. The Boston team alone has grown to over 80 developers, including talent from major franchises like Grand Theft Auto and God of War, and is expected to double in size within two years. While details are scarce, creator Mike Pondsmith has teased that the sequel will feature a brand-new city in addition to Night City, describing its feel as “like Chicago gone wrong”. Actor Keanu Reeves has also expressed a strong desire to return as Johnny Silverhand.

Despite the focus on the sequel, the original Cyberpunk 2077 may not be finished. Persistent rumors and cryptic social media posts from CD Projekt Red have led to speculation within the community about a potential content drop or announcement planned for the game’s fifth anniversary in December 2025. As one of the studio’s two flagship franchises, alongside The Witcher, Cyberpunk has evolved from a turbulent launch into a foundational pillar for CD Projekt’s ambitious future.
