No Man’s Sky: Pokémon Comes to Outer Space with New Xeno Arena Update

Hello Games has done it again. On April 8, the studio quietly dropped “Xeno Arena” update for No Man’s Sky, and it’s one of the most unexpected additions in the game’s ten-year lifespan: a full-blown turn-based creature battle system, free for all players across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and VR.

The premise is simple. Players explore the universe, tame the alien wildlife they encounter on planets, and assemble a battle team from their companions. Those creatures then face off in holographic arenas called Holo-Arena tables, found at space stations, planetary buildings, settlements, and aboard the Space Anomaly hub. Combat is turn-based and tactical: each creature has a unique moveset shaped by its species and home planet’s climate, covering attacks, heals, stuns, shields, status effects, and more. There are 8 elemental affinities to learn and exploit, encouraging players to build diverse, synergistic teams.

Creatures gain experience through battle and unlock genetic mutations via a new Morphogenetics system, improving their stats over time. Breeding also plays a role. The Egg Sequencer aboard the Space Anomaly can be used to refine offspring, with personality and physical traits like body size influencing battle performance.

Beyond AI opponents, the update introduces full PvP at the Space Anomaly, daily challenges issued by a new NPC named Iteration: Oceanus, and a brand-new faction, the Arena League, with ranks, medals, and mission guidance to keep competitive players progressing. The maximum number of tameable companions has also been bumped from 18 to 30.

Hello Games themselves cite Pokémon, Palworld, and World of Warcraft’s pet battle system as direct inspirations. The studio notes that after a decade of building an infinite universe full of unique creatures, adding a genuine gameplay purpose to that diversity felt like a natural next step.

Xeno Arena is available now as a free update. The full patch notes are on the official No Man’s Sky website.
