In the fog-shrouded remnants of Godstone Island, where a macabre cult once conducted unspeakable rituals until 1950, a new tale of supernatural dread is about to unfold. Developed by the Spanish indie studio DALOAR, The Occultist invites players into the shoes of Alan Rebels, a seasoned paranormal investigator whose personal stake in the mystery runs deep: his father’s inexplicable disappearance has drawn him to this forsaken British isle. Armed with a mystical pendulum of enigmatic origins, Alan navigates the eerie streets and decaying structures, peering into an “other reality” teeming with restless souls, some to be communed with, others evaded at all costs.

This first-person narrative thriller, blending psychological horror with survival elements, marks DALOAR‘s ambitious debut, a project born from a tight-knit team of around ten passionate creators in Valladolid, Spain, who have poured their expertise into crafting an experience powered by Unreal Engine 5’s breathtaking visuals. While DALOAR may be newcomers to the scene, their publisher Daedalic brings a storied legacy that seamlessly bridges the gap to this occult venture.

What truly sets The Occultist apart is its innovative core mechanic: the mystic pendulum, which enables Alan to manipulate the environment through four (or even five) unique abilities, from revealing hidden occult traces to altering realities and solving mind-bending puzzles steeped in arcane lore.

Expect tense stealth sequences where direct confrontation is off the table, heart-pounding explorations of Godstone’s haunted locales, and encounters with memorable, nightmarish entities that turn every shadow into a potential threat. The game’s atmosphere is amplified by an original score from acclaimed composer Pepe Herrero, whose haunting melodies promise to linger long after the credits roll.

Previews of the recently updated Steam demo have already whispered praise for its immersive dread and technical prowess, with outlets noting a “successful atmosphere” and “powerful technical section” that punches above indie weight.

The Occultist is set to release on April 8, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is a pivotal moment for Daedalic, since the studio is under Nacon umbrella (that was recently hit with insolvency crisis) but the momentum feels undeterred. Building on Daedalic’s proven formula of gripping tales and atmospheric depth, coupled with DALOAR’s fresh vision, this could herald a triumphant return for the publisher in the booming psychological horror space. If the demo’s chilling promise holds, The Occultist might just lift Godstone’s curse and etch itself into players’ nightmares as a modern classic.
