Don’t Starve Elsewhere: A New Chapter for an Iconic Series

Klei Entertainment has officially announced Don’t Starve Elsewhere, the next standalone entry in the beloved Don’t Starve series. The game was unveiled as one of eight world premieres at the Triple-i Initiative 2026 indie showcase, accompanied by an announcement trailer. It is currently in development for PC, with no release date announced yet.

The original Don’t Starve (2013) and its co-op expansion Don’t Starve Together defined a genre with their uncompromising survival gameplay, hand-drawn Tim Burton-esque art style, and punishing but fair difficulty. Don’t Starve Elsewhere carries that DNA forward while making one of the most significant structural changes in the series’ history: the world is now three-dimensional.

Where previous games presented a flat, top-down wilderness, Elsewhere introduces a genuinely multi-tiered landscape. Players can climb snow-covered mountain peaks, swim across rushing rivers and turbulent seas, and spelunk deep into winding underground cave systems. The iconic hand-drawn art style is retained, but adapted to a fully 3D environment, and yes, there is now a jump button (!).

New world, new threats

The world of Don’t Starve Elsewhere is procedurally generated, ensuring each playthrough is unique. Several entirely new biomes have been confirmed, each with its own distinct climate and ecosystem:

  • Redwood forests battered by relentless rainstorms
  • High-altitude mountain zones with extreme cold and territorial creatures
  • Cave systems filled with new underground hazards

A major new environmental mechanic is the Fog, a creeping, mysterious presence that spreads across the landscape and curses everything it touches. Players must decide whether to flee from it or push into it at the risk of their sanity, a nod to the series’ signature sanity system.

The trailer also teases a roster of new enemies and creatures: hostile plant monsters, porcupine-like creatures, and what appears to be a goat-human hybrid among them.

Fan-favourite characters return, with the trailer confirming Wendy, Willow, Wilson, and WX-78 among the playable roster. The game is set in an all-new world separate from The Constant, with new NPCs, items, and a story yet to be fully revealed.

Solo or co-op

Like Don’t Starve Together, Elsewhere supports both solo play and multiplayer co-op. Players can gather friends to build a shared base, divide tasks, and survive together, though more companions means more mouths to feed, keeping the survival pressure very much intact.

Klei has not announced a release date or confirmed platforms beyond PC. Based on the studio’s track record, an Early Access launch on Steam before a wider release seems likely. No pricing has been announced.

Don’t Starve Elsewhere is available to wishlist on Steam now.
