Ubisoft had a plan. On April 20, the French publisher released a seven-second teaser with the self-deprecating headline “Gaming’s worst kept secret,” and announced a worldwide showcase for April 23 to officially unveil Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. What happened next surprised no one: the trailer leaked anyway, because at this point leaking is simply what Black Flag Resynced does.
An anonymous X (formerly Twitter) account under the handle @intercelluar casually posted a screenshot from what appeared to be a 1-minute, 8-second reveal trailer, accompanied by a disclaimer that the footage featured a blend of “in-progress gameplay and in-game cinematics.” After being pressured by followers, the account relented and shared a 10-second clip, then went quiet with the note “here’s a piece, won’t post more sorry.”
“Gaming’s worst kept secret”
— Ubisoft’s own words, delivered with the weary grin of a publisher that has been losing this battle for three years.
The footage that surfaced shows protagonist Edward Kenway and the legendary pirate Blackbeard engaged in naval combat aboard the iconic Jackdaw. Cannons fire, cutlasses gleam, and Kenway grips the ship’s wheel against a backdrop of dramatically upgraded lighting and water physics. Side-by-side comparisons circulated by fans confirm the character models are substantially more detailed than the 2013 original. Kenway even delivers a line from what sounds like the game’s opening: “So let the Black Flag signal nothing but your allegiance to man’s natural freedoms.” Voice actor Matt Ryan, who once joked that Ubisoft “threatened to sue” him over a leak, is very much still on board.
Notably, the official Ubisoft description for the game refers to “the iconic solo pirate adventure,” suggesting the original’s multiplayer mode will not be making the return voyage.

Three Years of Leaks and One Very Patient Fanbase
The existence of a Black Flag remake first surfaced in rumors as far back as June 2023. Since then, the project has leaked through age rating boards, anonymous developer sources, Steam database entries, a promotional statue, and its own lead actor. Ubisoft only formally acknowledged the game in March 2026, at which point the internet had already seen much of it.
The original Black Flag is widely regarded as one of the finest entries in the Assassin’s Creed series, beloved for its open Caribbean world, naval combat system, and a protagonist who was refreshingly motivated by gold and rum rather than centuries-old conspiracies. It has accumulated over 34 million players since launch. The-0 timing of Resynced is significant: Ubisoft is under financial pressure following a string of underperforming releases, and confidence in the publisher among gamers is fragile. A beloved classic, remade well, could be exactly what the company needs.
Reports also suggest that Black Flag Resynced is only the beginning, if the remake succeeds commercially, Ubisoft reportedly has additional classic-era entries lined up for similar treatment. The full story, hopefully, will emerge tomorrow at the worldwide showcase.
