Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced: The Beloved Pirate Classic Is Getting a Remake

It’s official: Edward Kenway is sailing back. Ubisoft confirmed a remake of the beloved 2013 swashbuckling adventure in an “Assassin’s Creed: Into 2026” blog post in March, with a statement from head of content Jean Guesdon. The game is officially titled Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

The announcement was a long time in the making. Speculation reached a fever pitch in 2025, when a series of supposed leaks surfaced, including hints from a statue maker and even Edward Kenway’s voice actor. An age rating on the official PEGI website for “Black Flag Resynced” then appeared before the title was confirmed. Towards the end of 2025, Steam updates seemingly pointed to Ubisoft readying something Black Flag-shaped.

PEGI awarded Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced a PEGI 18 rating, indicating the ratings board played through the game to determine the classification.

Ubisoft’s actual reveal was characteristically coy. Rather than naming the project directly, Ubisoft shared artwork in the blog post and wrote what seemed intended as a tongue-in-cheek note: “Speculation around Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it’s worth repeating: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.’ Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon.”

Development has been handed to Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios, focusing on a full reconstruction that brings the graphics and mechanics up to the level of recent productions. The project was internally codenamed “Obsidian.”

This isn’t shaping up to be a simple remaster. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is believed to be a massive overhaul, potentially featuring new story content, improved details and graphics, revised Modern Day segments, and new world activities.

What’s Changing?

The biggest talking point among fans is the potential shift in game design. The original Black Flag featured fixed weapon types, timing- and counter-focused combat, and limited playstyle choice, with only lite RPG elements. It is largely believed that Resynced will overhaul the game with full-blown open-world RPG mechanics, including loot, gear stats, and hitbox-driven combat. That’s a significant departure from the original’s tighter design, and it’s dividing fans already.

According to internal documentation obtained by Insider Gaming, the game is scheduled to release in FY 2027 Q2, anywhere from June to August. Some sources suggest a July release, though Ubisoft’s recent history of delays warrants caution.

The original sold over 15 million copies and introduced innovative piracy mechanics that influenced later entries in the series. For a franchise that has been through significant turbulence in recent years, Black Flag Resynced represents a major bet, a chance to revisit one of gaming’s most beloved open worlds and bring it to a new generation.

Whether the RPG overhaul is a welcome evolution or a betrayal of the original’s spirit remains to be seen. What’s certain is that Edward Kenway’s return is one of 2027’s most anticipated gaming events.
