Insect Swarm Walker

Overview

The Insect Swarm Walker is a variant of the Walker first encountered during the story quest The Chosen One, before being found all across Los Angeles. The Swarm Walker’s mutation has caused a beehive to fuse to its abdomen. These symbiotic insects attack anyone nearby, possibly attempting to infect them just as their host zombie would, or alternatively, simply responding to perceived threats to their hive.

Insect Swarm Walkers wear, quite ironically, the pest control uniform of the company Beez-B-Gone: a button-up shirt with the company logo on the front and back, black trousers and shoes, teal rubber gloves, a black Beez-B-Gone cap, and a pair of safety glasses. The same uniform is shared by one variant of the Hazmat Walker found at the SoLA Festival, as Beez-B-Gone appears to have been contracted there before the outbreak.

From a distance, Insect Swarm Walkers are largely indistinguishable from regular Walkers. However, upon approaching, the buzzing of the insects becomes clearly audible as they swarm around the hive and host. The insects are the real threat, they are faster than the Walker itself, they fly directly toward survivors and swarm them, biting and stinging. If they reach the player, the swarm drains stamina, reducing heavy attack capability and agility, particularly dangerous when the Walker is part of a larger group or accompanied by Apex variants. The swarm also inflicts damage directly, rapidly depleting health if left unaddressed.

Swarm Walkers are weak to fire, shock, and caustic damage, and their limbs can be severed easily. Destroying the hive in the Walker’s abdomen, which takes only one or two swings, will disperse the swarm permanently. Killing the Walker itself also disperses the insects automatically, so it is viable to simply focus all attacks on the Walker and ignore the swarm entirely. A Chem Bomb will disperse the swarm and stop it inflicting effects. A Medkit serves the same purpose, as does entering a body of water.

Where to Find Them

The first encounter is at the GOAT Pen property in Bel-Air when returning at night after the Halperin Hotel mission, on the path heading into the property. For farming, a reliable spawn is in Bel-Air on Access Road 780 outside the HQ.
