Walker

Overview

Walkers are the most common type of zombie featured in Dead Island 2, first encountered during the story quest Flight of the Damned and found in large numbers across all of Los Angeles. They are slow-moving zombies with no real special characteristics of their own. They can be seen walking around aimlessly, standing motionless, or feeding on corpses. They are humans who have fully undergone the zombification process and have been undead for a while, becoming slow, shambling, and rotting.

As infected, undead humans, Walkers share several common traits. Their facial area is typically blood-covered and damaged, specifically around the jaw, where constant tearing and gnashing of meat has damaged the muscles and skin. Their skin shows signs of decay, including swollen, deep red veins protruding across the body. They have generally spotty hair where part or all of it has dropped out, and many show visible signs of the method of infection, mostly chunks of flesh that have been ripped away, bitten, or eaten. Their clothes are rarely undamaged, with most showing tears, rips, and stains of blood or dirt. Walkers tend to congregate in packs, though this is likely out of accident rather than any coordinated attempt.

Walkers shuffle around their immediate area aimlessly, occasionally pausing to sniff or roar, otherwise standing around without purpose. When alerted, they walk toward the player and attempt to grab and swipe at them.

Maiming a Walker’s arms weakens its attacks and forces it to rely on biting as its primary attack. Maiming the legs turns it into a Crawler, capable only of crawling slowly and grabbing at the player’s legs. Severing the head kills the Walker instantly regardless of remaining health. Firearms are generally not worth using against Walkers due to their low threat level, melee weapons conserve ammo and are far more efficient. Walkers are susceptible to Meat Bait, which gathers them into one area for around ten seconds, enabling quick area-of-effect kills through weapon mods, environmental hazards, or curveballs.

Notable Walkers

Colt Swanson – safe room of his mansion, story-related.

Goat Pen Marissa – *IMPORTANT* The three goat pen zombies will despawn and never return after you have looted the goat pen key, DO NOT LEAVE THE AREA until you have killed all 3 and marked that you get credit for them. There is no way to recover from this and you can consider your named zombie hunt completion impossible until NG+ if you do not kill these 3 zombies here on your first visit. I suggest killing them in this order- Troy, Marissa, Dan, as I have noticed Troy despawning before I picked up the key because I got too far away from the roof. Marissa spawns in the recording studio below the bedroom that leads to where Troy is. Update: This bug is still present in the latest version of the game (1.7)

Goat Pen Dan *see note above* Dan spawns in the bowling alley in the basement of the Goat Pen.

Goat Pen Jamie – spawns in the basement of the Goat Pen during the sidequest Creature Comforts. Do not complete this quest without having killed Jamie, as he will despawn afterwards and be lost forever.

Major Ryan – story-related, spawns at the gate to Monarch Studios.

Colonel Evans – story-related, spawns at the gate to Monarch Studios.

Private Kramer – story-related, spawns at the gate to Monarch Studios.

Michael’s Protege – story-related, spawns at the gate to Monarch Studios.

Farouk – spawns inside Michael’s neighbors house during the first Rikki Rex sidequest. He’s on the first floor standing over the first quest objective to pick up so he’s really hard to miss.

The Bass Player – spawns during the quest The Ballad of Rikki Rex. Unmissable during the quest.

Monarch Security – spawns in Jimmy Montana’s trailer, no pre-requisites other than having Monarch Studios unlocked.

Caroyln Sanchez NOTE this and the next 4 named zombies will always be present on your subsequent visits to Monarch Studios. This is a bug but you will get credit for them the first time you kill them. Spawns outside Kelli Jo’s trailer. Approaching her/the trailer will cause the next 4 named zombies to spawn.

Stephen Phelps *see note above* spawns at Kelli Jo’s trailer.

Paul Everett*see note above* spawns at Kelli Jo’s trailer.

Kirk Vasquez*see note above* spawns at Kelli Jo’s trailer.

Jennifer Emerick*see note above* spawns at Kelli Jo’s trailer.

Sergio – spawns during Missing: Steve in Jimmy Montana’s trailer. Can’t be missed if you’re on this quest. Will respawn on subsequent visits to Monarch, does not grant additional credit.

Roach – spawns on the boardwalk probably after completing The Giant Slayer, south of the Tasty Donut shop halfway to the military compound in a little seating area with some benches.

Jo’s Shambling Body – spawns during the Lost & Found Quest Jo’s Rainy Day Stash at its red truck.

Scotty – spawns at the final location that the quest Jo’s Rainy Day Stash takes you to.

Nick – spawns at the final location that the quest Jo’s Rainy Day Stash takes you to.

Officer Mckenzie – spawns southwest of the Police station near that little circle thing on the map. Requires completion of the quest Cold Pork and having no other active quests in the police station like Missing: Laura or Burt’s first quest.

Jake Jones – spawns outside the skateboard shop near the end of the boardwalk. Probably requires completion of Giant Slayer. Also cannot have an active quest in the area like Organ Donor.

Ollie – spawns on the thin strip of sidewalk above all the little surfboard graphics on the map, approx southeast of where you fought Jake Jones.

Lt Hicks – story-related, unmissable. Spawns during the Beach Offensive quest.

Police Chief Malloy – spawns during the quest Missing: Laura, impossible to miss if you’re doing this quest.

Emily – spawns at the end of Missing: Laura.

Laura – spawns at the end of Missing: Laura.

Doc Marin – spawns outside the Gang Green store during the quest Missing: Pablo.

Grant – spawns during Drunk & Disorderly quest in the tattoo parlor.

Cole – spawns during the Drunk & Disorderly quest near Gang Green store.

Signal Officer – spawns during the Letters to the Dead quest.

Lt. Ford – spawns in the tent where you found the first parts of the code during Beach Offensive. Shows up as soon as you activate the quest Search for the Truth. Drops the quest starter for [REDACTED] where you get Body Count at the end.

Lt. Land – spawns on the boat the far north end of the military outpost beach, not the burning pits area. Requires you to have completed Beach Offensive and have no other active quests in the area.

Private Delgado – spawns at the end of the [REDACTED] quest.

Serling Concierge – spawns on the second floor of the Serling Hotel after beginning the quest, Plumbing the Depths.

Henry – spawns in the OSK store alleyway during the story quest Search for the Truth.

Preston – spawns in little nook with some porta potties on the Pier. Pick up the note in that area which is right next to his safe that his key unlocks and he will crawl out of the nearby vent and attack.

Nick the Usher – spawns behind the bleachers in Hollywood near the porta potties. A note in the ticket office references him. Spawns after completing the game and also clearing any quests in the area if you choose to activate them before killing him.

Zahra (HAUS DLC) – spawns during Missing: Zahra, at the entrance to the HAUS compound.

Latrine Lady (SoLA DLC) – spawns in the toilets area near Grace’s Compound. Is always there as far as I can tell and does not require picking up any notes or any quest completion in SoLA. She also drops nothing. Just an easter egg that references events around the festival. Also the toilet she’s in front of is really gross.

Lounge Staff “A” (SoLA DLC) – spawns in the poolside bar right before the main stage. Shows up pretty much as soon as you arrive there.

Kimberly (SoLA DLC) – Kimberly spawns behind the locked door north of the dj setup in the pool in Utopia. The door is locked from the other side so to get to her you have to walk through the pool. It’s not really hidden but still she is easy to miss if you aren’t looking for her because she’s on the ground and does not actively hunt you unless you kick her awake or start enough of a fight near her to attract her attention. Kimberely will always be present here but killing her multiple times does not increase your named zombie count. Only the first kill counts. Spawns after talking to Cadenza in the club no note required.

Indie Zone Staff (SoLA DLC) – spawns at Daquiris in the Indie Zone, author has encountered it most often after finishing the second beat event in the Indie Zone. Does not appear to spawn as long as you have an active quest in the area.

Lounge Staff “T” (SoLA DLC) – spawns in the Eco Village bar. You cannot have a quest active in this area for him to spawn.

VCLA Clare (SoLA DLC) – Spawns at the Aurora Gate by the turnstiles after you have completed the SoLA story. Also dies incredibly easy so you may not even notice you killed her while you’re grappling with the two apexes. If you pick up the keys from Freddie she won’t respawn so be careful. I’d definitely backup a save before taking on this encounter.

Lula Belle (SoLA DLC) – spawns in the eco village in one of the yurts. Drops the note Hairsterical. Won’t spawn till after you visit the Main Stage for the first time and have no active quests in the Eco Village area (most notably Memories of Flesh).

Where to Find Them

Walkers are found everywhere across Los Angeles from the very first moments of the game. They are the most abundant zombie type by far and require no specific conditions to encounter, spawning in every area, every building, and every zone throughout the entire game.
